The Collagen Crisis of Aging
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body, accounting for

Collagen supplements are derived from four primary sources: bovine (cow), porcine (pig),
chicken, and marine (fish). Marine collagen is increasingly recognised by researchers as the
superior choice for human supplementation for several reasons:
Superior Bioavailability
Marine collagen is composed predominantly of Type I collagen (the skin, bone, and tendon
form) and has a smaller particle size (molecular weight ~500 Daltons vs. ~300,000 Daltons
for intact collagen). This small size enables significantly faster and more complete absorption
through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream — research suggests marine collagen
peptides achieve 1.5x better absorption compared to bovine collagen.
Type I Collagen Dominance
The skin is composed almost entirely of Type I collagen. Marine collagen is the richest
natural source of Type I collagen, making it specifically targeted for dermal health, unlike
chicken collagen which is predominantly Type II (cartilage-specific).
Clean Source Protein
Marine collagen contains no religious or dietary restrictions, unlike bovine (concerns for

Human Clinical Evidence
The evidence base for oral collagen supplementation has expanded substantially over the
past decade, moving from anecdote to rigorous clinical trials:
A 2014 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Skin Pharmacology and
Physiology (Proksch et al.) recruited 69 women aged 35–55 and administered 2.5g of
collagen peptides or placebo daily for 8 weeks. The collagen group showed a statistically
significant 20% reduction in eye wrinkle depth and significantly improved skin elasticity
compared to placebo. Notably, subjects aged 50+ showed greater improvements than
younger participants.
A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Drugs in
Dermatology (Choi et al.) analysed 11 randomised controlled trials comprising 805 patients
and concluded that oral collagen supplementation demonstrated statistically significant
improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle reduction, with excellent tolerability.
The authors concluded that collagen supplementation shows promise as an anti-aging
nutraceutical.
For joint health, a 2008 study in Current Medical Research and Opinion (McAlindon et al.)
administered 10g of hydrolysed collagen daily to 250 athletes with activity-related joint pain.
After 24 weeks, statistically significant improvements in joint pain, mobility, and stiffness
were observed compared to placebo — with the greatest benefits seen in the knee joint.
